St. Swithun Wells Fellowship Meeting - Wed. 18th May.

Benn Mugisha from Kware will be coming to meet with us and update us on recent progress in Kware. The evening will begin with a short liturgy of thanksgiving for the generous support that Benn receives from many in our community. Over the past 5 and half years we have sent over £28,500 to support the work of Benn and Helen in Kware, the majority of which has been to fund a feeding programme for the children in the local school. We would like to invite all our supporters and anyone who is interested in the work taking place in Kware to this evening. The evening begins at 7.45 pm and will finish at approx 9 pm. Cheese and wine will be provided at the end of the evening when there will be a chance to chat to Benn informally.

Christian Aid Week Activities

Cycle Pilgrimage to San Diago de Compostela  Hi All Friends and Supporters, It is time to think especially about Christian Aid again I had a wonderful response to my appeal last year…over £2,500!  Many thanks to all generous sponsors. I know the money is well spent meeting crisis needs and long-term projects in developing countries around the world in conjunction with many other faith and non-faith groups.

This year I want to make the epic pilgrimage to Compostela in Spain. The most popular pilgrim route throughout the Middle Ages.  Having decided to do the pilgrimage ‘properly’….from my home in Winchester I  knew this would be too far in the 2 weeks I have at the beginning of June. So….in the last week of March I cycled the first 1,000+kms from Winchester to the main starting point Vezelay in France…via Lisieux;Chartres;Orleans and Fleury….all pilgrim places in their own right. At Vezelay I joined the monks at Vespers to pray for a successful journey…a very moving experience…and continued as far as Limoges. I followed the traditional  Route de St Jacques via numerous old churches which all bear witness to the faith of millions of pilgrims.

I plan to take the train back to Limoges and complete the remaining 1,000++ kms at the end of May.  I do hope you will sponsor me again despite all the other demands made on you. Cheques should be made out to ‘Christian Aid’ and sent to me : Jane Hough, 6 Ruffield Close; Winchester; SO22 5JL or website

APF-Association  for the Propagation of the Faith

The APF is 75 years old this year.  There will be a commemorative Mass in every diocese in England and Wales – the Portsmouth Diocese Mass will be at                   St. Edmund Campion in Maidenhead on Saturday, 28 May, 2011, at 11am.  The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Crispian Hollis. The total raised for the APF in 2010 is £3,130,965.  Gift Aid total raised over £54,000.  (This amount represents the additional 25% claimed on donations made by red box holders who have signed up to the gift aid scheme.)  The APF is able to help people and communities in all sorts of ways, whatever and whenever the need.  This is made possible by the generous support of the many thousands who contribute through their red boxes.  Thanks to everyone who has a red box and who is involved in collecting and promoting the charity.  The Parish of St Swithun Wells raised in total £5077 from red boxes in 2010.  If you would like further details please contact Helena Bedford on 023 8027 4232.
